Lithium polymer (also known as LiPo) is a well-known chemistry that is often used in batteries. For example, LiPo batteries are often used in development projects for various professional applications.

Choose the right LiPo battery in time

When companies set up a technical development process, the choice of battery type often receives attention too late. This can lead to unpleasant surprises and unnecessary delays, for example because a battery does not fit, does not provide the correct performance, or requires additional design adjustments.

In many of these processes, LiPo batteries are chosen. This is logical: LiPo batteries are small, lightweight, and compact, making them easy to integrate into a variety of systems. In addition, the size of a LiPo battery (length × width × height) can be adjusted to a limited extent to the design. As a result, LiPo batteries often better match the specifications and available space within the system in which they are used.

In addition, these battery types have other properties that make them attractive for professional applications.

Benefits of Lithium Polymer batteries

LiPo batteries offer advantages over other types of (rechargeable) batteries. A number of these benefits are explained below.

  • Low weight: LiPo batteries are approximately 20 to 35% lighter than, for example, NiMH batteries. Ideal for portable and compact applications
  • No memory effect: LiPo batteries retain their capacity even when (partially) discharged and recharged frequently
  • High discharge current: can deliver a high amount of power in a short time; ideal for demanding devices such as motors and hard drives
  • Wide temperature range: reliable in a variety of conditions. Charging can be done at 0 °C to +60 °C, discharging at −20 °C to +40 °C
  • More environmentally friendly: do not contain toxic heavy metals such as cadmium or mercury
  • High energy density: more charge per volume than NiCd or NiMH, resulting in high capacity (mAh) in a compact format
  • Long lifespan: typically long-lasting and highly rechargeable, often 300+ charge cycles, making them suitable for applications where replacement is difficult

In addition to lithium polymer, there are other lithium batteries that are often used in professional applications. Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) and lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are a few examples.
