Battery regulations have changed, but there remains much uncertainty about the availability of NiCd batteries for emergency lighting. We'd like to tell you what's currently happening.
The EU introduced a new regulation on August 17, 2023. After a transition period, from August 18, 2025 portable batteries may only contain a maximum of 0.002% cadmium . This may affect current batteries in emergency lighting.
There is currently a discussion about whether emergency lighting falls under portable applications. Under the new legislation, emergency lighting appears more likely to fall under industrial applications.

As long as it is unclear exactly which application emergency lighting falls under, Elfa will continue to temporarily supply NiCd batteries for emergency lighting – at least until August 2025.
