Elfa supports the StrandRover project for a sustainable future

The StrandRover project, initiated by students from Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen, aims to develop an autonomous robot that effectively detects and collects waste on the beach. This initiative contributes to reducing coastline pollution and protecting the natural environment.

Elfa Elementenfabriek sponsors the project with a battery, specifically a Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery, which enables the StrandRover to perform its tasks. This battery has a high energy density and fast charging time, allowing the robot to efficiently identify and clear waste.

Through this sponsorship, Elfa Elementenfabriek demonstrates its commitment to societal issues and its dedication to a sustainable living environment.

StrandRover project in a nutshell

Launched in September 2022, the StrandRover project is currently in its third phase: the realization phase. The robot, equipped with a camera, gripper arm, waste bin, and solar panel, drives autonomously across the beach and uses image recognition to identify and clear various types of waste. The project illustrates how students apply their creativity and technical skills to address a socially relevant problem.

Elfa's contribution to the StrandRover project

As a partner of the StrandRover project, Elfa Elementenfabriek has not only supplied a Li-ion battery but also provided valuable advice and support to the students. The battery supplies the robot with the necessary energy to efficiently detect and collect waste. Elfa's involvement goes beyond sponsorship; the company shares its expertise to help the students achieve the best power supply for the robot.

Why Elfa is socially committed

As a family business with over 100 years of experience in lighting, batteries, rechargeable batteries, and energy storage systems, Elfa is not just a supplier but also a partner to its customers.

Daan Schutte (Sales Director at Elfa) explains:

"With the StrandRover project, we demonstrate how chemistry can make a societal contribution to a better world. This autonomous robot, developed by students, not only cleans up waste on the beach but also contributes to the circular economy and the reduction of CO2 emissions. Furthermore, with this project, we aim to stimulate the innovative spirit of students by challenging them to come up with creative solutions for sustainable issues."

By supporting socially relevant initiatives like the StrandRover project, Elfa demonstrates that innovative and sustainable business practices can go hand in hand with making a positive difference for society and the environment.
