A specific application requires a specific battery
Elfa used to be a battery manufacturer and now an importer of an extremely wide range of primary (non-rechargeable) batteries. That means that there is not only a lot of expertise, but also that a solutions is always available to every problem or can be developed. There are therefore many types of batteries which can differ from each other in terms of properties. A battery that can be used at -20˚C, a battery that can handle a high peak in demand or an alkaline battery at the lowest possible price? A number of types of batteries will be discussed here. These are the alkaline, primary lithium and zinc air-alkaline batteries.
Alkaline batteries are the most commonly used types of batteries. The alkaline variant provides a lot of energy, even at lower temperatures. These batteries are suitable for single use and have the lowest purchase price and low self-discharge. They are very suitable for devices that use little power for a long time.
The best known producer is Duracell for this type of batteries. But in the meantime, besides Duracell, there are many more producers who produce good alkaline batteries. Think of Panasonic en Energizer. Elfa can also deliver Procell batterijen for professional bulk consumption. This product line replaces the Duracell Industrial batteries. These are high-performance, simply packaged alkaline batteries for large consumption.

Lithium metal batteries are also for single use. A distinctive thing is the fact that they last up to 7x longer than the alkaline variant. Where a much higher peak power is required, lithium is the solution. Think, for example, of alarm systems, automotive devices and wireless sensors. Elfa supplies, among other things, lithium batteries from Tadiran; by far the best quality lithium batteries in the world. Thanks to the very high quality standard, Tadiran its lithium batteries to, among others, the aerospace industry. A much used lithium variant of Tadiran is the SL2780S. This is Li-ThionylChloride battery, the most powerful and reliable batteries capable of operating more than 20 years in the most challenging conditions.

We also supply the lithium batteries from the high-tech battery manufacturer Saft, which produces specialist batteries for, among others, aviation, railways, space travel, defense and emergency power systems. The LS battery type is characterized by long-term applications, namely from 3 to 15 years. Below is an example of this specific type of battery.

But Elfa sees that lithium is also increasingly used in consumer equipment such as wireless alarm systems and in places where temperature is an issue. After all, lithium works from -20 to +40 degrees Celsius. Elfa can also deliver Energizer an example of a brand that delivers high quality lithium batteries. Elfa can also deliver Energizer lithium-batteries and can choose from various chemistries such as Lithium Manganese Diocide (Li-MnO2) and Lithium Thionyl Chloride (Li-SOCI2).

The world is demanding more and more battery and battery solutions and manufacturers are therefore coming up with new chemical compositions. Elfa follows the latest developments here. Elfa sees all kinds of new battery technologies in development, such as Sodium ion, Lithium sulfur and Solid-state batteries. These are interesting developments and Elfa keeps a close eye on everything.
A particular type that deserves some extra attention are the air-alkaline batteries from Cegasa. They offer extremely high energy density and high output voltage and stability throughout the discharge. They are therefore known for their high quality, durability and long life. Perhaps even more interesting: the Cegasa zinc air; a very small, light and compact battery that lasts a very long time.

In addition to the standard sizes of primary batteries, Elfa also offers all kinds of other batteries with their own IEC codes or ANSI codes. Sometimes standard formats do not offer a good solution. Used batteries are best taken back. The Stibat (“Stichting Batterijen”) coordinates the collection of spent batteries in the Netherlands. Handing in empty batteries is good for the environment and handing it in is therefore the first step in successful recycling. Full collection bins and boxes are collected by Stibat. The exhausted batteries are then sorted and offered for recycling to selected recyclers in Europe.
